POLICE are becoming increasing worried about the safety of a 22-year-old woman who has tried to kill herself for the second time in two weeks.

In the early hours of Saturday morning, officers were called to rescue the woman from a freezing stretch of the Kennet and Avon Canal near the A350 in Semington.

Just a week earlier, PC Roland Jones pulled her from the same location and she was taken to the Royal United Hospital in Bath, suffering from hypothermia.

WPC Jo Tidmarsh, who was involved in the latest rescue operation, dislocated her shoulder while carrying the distraught woman to safety.

She said: "While we were carrying her towards the ambulance she slipped and when I caught her legs the weight of them took my shoulder out.

"I was taken to the RUH where it was x-rayed and I was given painkillers and anti-inflammatories.

"I need physiotherapy and won't be able to return to work until it is sorted out.

"At the end of the day it's not anybody's fault.

"It is an occupational hazard and it's our job to preserve life."

Officers were in the area at the time an emergency call was made by frantic friends of the 22 year old.

Running towards Devizes and with the help of lights from a police helicopter, they found the woman about half a mile along the towpath.

"When we got there we found one woman and two men," said WPC Tidmarsh.

"One of the men had jumped in to try and get her out and when we got there they were just dragging her out on to the side.

"We were told the woman had been in the water for 20 minutes.

"We were concerned because she sufferers from severe asthma attacks and was starting to have breathing difficulties. She was very, very cold and distressed and was taken home by friends."

The Trowbridge-based officer explained that the woman was already receiving help from social workers but hoped support would be stepped up in the light of the two suicide attempts.

WPC Tidmarsh said: "We are concerned about her safety.

"She is ill structures have been put in place to help her in the past but these need to be reviewed," she added.

"At the end of the day she needs help because you never know what will happen in the future.

"It was a good job we found her when we did on both occasions."
