YOUNG fashion fans threw themselves into a frenzy of creativity at West Swindon Library.

More than 21 turned up at the library to take part in a project to design a new outfit for the star of TV show Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Sarah Michelle Gellar.

The one-off scheme was the brainchild of library manager Kristianne Drake.

She said: "We are very keen to promote library services for teenagers, who make up a large proportion of non library users. The first step in doing that is to try to encourage them through the doors.

"We have a life-sized cut-out of Buffy and I just came up with the idea of holding a fashion designing competition, where we could ask teenagers to design a new outfit for her.

"And I have been really impressed by the response that we have had."

The initiative has been supported by Asda and the Body Shop which had donated prizes for some of the winners.

One of those taking part was 13-year-old Ross Dearing, who said: "At school I don't really get as much time as I would like to do creative things like this. It is a really good chance to express myself.

He was there with his friend Rachel Silverton, 13.

"I really love watching the Buffy programme, it is one of my favourites, so it is great fun to have the chance to think about what sorts of things she might wear," she said.

"I think this is a good idea to hold these sorts of activities in the library."

The young designers worked under the watchful eye of art and design lecturer Su Fahy from Swindon College who said: "It is heartening that people seem to be so interested. There has been some wonderful work going on today."
