THE HOSPITAL waiting list in Swindon is coming down according to officials from the Great Western Hospital.

The Government has revealed the national waiting list has fallen to less than one million for the first time in a decade.

And the Swindon and Marlborough NHS Trust says the move to the £170 million new hospital with new equipment has helped cut its waiting list.

It points to the example of Dr Thamir Yasen, who is in charge of a medical team that cut the waiting time for a cataracts operation from 18 months three years ago to just three or four weeks now.

Chief executive Lyn Hill-Tout said: "The Trust was delighted that through the dedication and commitment of our staff that in the year 2002/03 we significantly reduced the length of time that patients had to wait for both elective inpatient and day case care.

"However we are not complacent and will be working as hard in the present year to continue to reduce the length of time patients wait to receive treatment."
