Wind power enthusiasts were out in force for a WOW open day.

Windpower Over Westmill comprises residents from around Watchfield who are in favour of plans to build a wind farm at Westmill.

More than 200 people enjoyed an afternoon of kite flying and demonstrations of renewable energy at the Old Airfield at Westmill Farm.

Organisations including Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth and National Energy Foundation set up displays and information points.

Clive Burke, from Dorchester-on Thames, took along several eco-friendly examples, including a wind-generated computer.

Mr Burke, 39, said: "I wanted to show people how anything and everything can be run from wind power. The computer is taking electricity formed through a wind generator fixed to the top of the tent."

Mr Burke had also included an environmentally friendly moped. He explained: "Most people just think wind energy powers their light bulbs but it can also be used for transport, which will vastly improve our environment."

Sarah Ward, from Stanford-in-the-Vale, turned up at yesterday's event with her three children Samuel, seven, Charlotte, four, and one-year-old Shannon.

Mrs Ward, 29, said: "I am completely behind any form of renewable energy. It's a great idea to have open days which are interesting but also allow children to learn while having fun."

Samuel said he had been a fan of kite flying for years.

"I love letting the kite go really high in the sky," he said. "I have gone to kite making days and it's fun."

Farmer Adam Twine, 42, is behind the wind farm scheme, which lies just 100 metres outside the Swindon borough boundary.

He said: "This is an opportunity for our supporters to come out and have a fun afternoon, while others have the chance to find out more about wind power.

"This isn't a huge plan on a global scale but it is important locally.

"Clean and safe energy should be the way forward."

The wind farm would create enough energy to power 3,700 homes.

But objectors say it would be a blot on the landscape, which would be visible as far away as Highworth, two kilometres away.

Westmill Windfarm already has planning permission for five Vestas 850 wind turbines.
