THE new Archbishop of Canterbury is a turn up for the Good Book. He's different, and uses rather complex language.

The office he holds will mould him to a certain extent. It is to be hoped it doesn't totally dilute the controversial side of his nature.

Too much compromise would make Rowan Williams a very dull Archbishop.

On the language side, he will have to create some populist phrases. I am not suggesting Freddie Starr ate my prayer book, but he must not just aim his speeches at theologians.
