LAVA LOUNGE dethroned the grand old men of Green Baize at the Swindon Town six-a-side tournament on Sunday.
The final of the Peter Godwin Memorial Trophy pitted the Lounge's current crop of semi-professional stars against Green Baize's greats of yesteryear in a veritable who's who of the Swindon soccer fraternity.
And it was the current crop of stars who triumphed with a 4-1 extra-time victory in the final.
The Lounge side featuring Supermarine men Dave Gee and Dave Slattery alongside Highworth regulars Marc Belcher and Justin Miller took a first-half lead in the showpiece when former Swindon star Paul Bodin was caught in possession and Slattery ran clear to prod home the opener.
Green Baize bounced back after the break and equalised when Supermarine assistant boss Pat Slattery teed up another ex-Swindon man, midfielder Martin Ling.
The scores remained level after the first period of extra time, but the younger legs of the Lava Lounge players told in the final five minutes.
John Reeves rifled in the decisive second and Dave Slattery went on to add two at the death to complete his hat-trick.
Few could dispute the Lounge's success they were unbeaten throughout the day, topping a six-team group which featured their final opponents Green Baize.
Comfortable victories over BCA I and Witney Youth followed in the quarters and semis.
Green Baize's route to the final proved slightly more hazardous.
A 2-1 round-robin defeat to Lava Lounge saw them qualify from Group 4 in second place.
A 3-0 win over MJM followed in the quarters before an epic 2-1 win over a Wyvern side boasting former Swindon youngsters Kevin Halliday and Jamie Mills within their ranks.
Teams that failed to shine in the initial group phase were given a second bite of the cherry in the plate competition.
The bottom four sides in the four groups went into the hat for the consolation prize, with David Owen and Red Army eventually progressing to the last two.
A tense final remained goalless until the last minute when Pete Culley scored a fine solo strike to earn Red Army the win.
