I was disappointed to read Stephen Green's letter (May 16) referring to my priorities on becoming the Mayor of Swindon.
Yes I did state that setting up the parlour would be one of my many priorities but definitely not the first.
Social inclusion for every citizen of our borough, good governance in the Council Chamber, planning the 600 plus engagements, that I will be expected to carry out during the coming year, visiting and entertaining people and children, giving comfort and solace to the sick and lonely, operating an open door policy so that I am readily accessible, the list is endless.
I am looking forward to my year in office, an office that I intend to carry out with great dignity and honour.
One thing I will always be aware of during my term as mayor is that a reputation is what people think you are, personality is what you seem to be and character is what you really are.
No Stephen, in spite of what you say I will not quit this post and I hope that 12 months from now you will again be putting pen to paper to thank me for the way I have carried out my public duties on behalf of the people of this borough.
(Coun) Derek Benfield
Mayor of Swindon
