YOUNG golfer Sam Elkins has added his name to the illustrious list of star golfers who have lifted the prestigious Wiltshire County Colts Matchplay title.
The Fordingbridge youngster triumphed after a mammoth 90 holes of golf which began with the 18-hole medal qualifier at Chippenham earlier this month.
There, he finished in second place after countback with 71, enough to qualify for the finals held last weekend.
On Saturday he beat Cumberwell's Charlie James, four and three, before brushing aside Tidworth's Barry Forster, five and four, to secure a place in Sunday's semi-finals.
The Burgate School sixth-former then reached the final with a two and one success against Andy Cooper of Cumberwell.
The final, against last year's winner Dan Fry of Marlborough proved a close contest with Sam emerging victorious on the 17th hole, two and one.
Elkins, who was named Journal Sport's young golfer of the year for 2002, is in good company in the list of previous winners of the event which include European Tour players Andy Beal and David Howell, England amateur international Martin Sell and respected county player Albert Much.
