A NEW household rubbish recycling centre has opened near Calne as part of Wiltshire County Council's strategy to increase recycling and reduce the use of landfill sites.
The centre was built by the county's waste disposal contractors Hills Waste and is located at the company's landfill site in Lower Compton.
People will be able to dispose of their waste paper, glass, cans, cardboard, plastic bottles, garden waste, timber, metals, white goods, rubble and soil. There will also be facilities for disposing of car batteries and oil.
The county council cabinet member for the environment, Fleur de Rhe-Philipe, said: "The first two recycling centres in north Wiltshire at Stanton St Quintin and Purton, are recycling 10,000 tonnes of rubbish a year.
"We have high hopes the new centre will perform as well."
The recycling centre is open seven days a week from 9am to 5pm from April to October, and from 9am to 4pm from November to March.
