EXTEND, the exercise class for the over 60s, has turned into such a success story that the group has moved to larger premises.

Instructor Meryl Stephens, 63, who started the class in Chippenham four years ago, said its popularity had soared in recent years, as news spread about the gentle exercise regime and great social atmosphere.

Putting her group through their weekly round of exercises to soothing classical music, she said: "Up until recently the Chippenham class was run at the hall of the Tabernacle Church in St Mary's Street, but it has become so popular, that we have now moved into the Masonic Lodge in Emery Lane, where there is a lot more room."

Extend is a national organisation aimed at promoting health and well-being among older people.

The Chippenham group meets every Wednesday for an hour of gentle exercises, ribbon exercises and basic dancing to keep members fit and well.

"I think it is so popular because it offers people the chance to stimulate their physical and mental health," said Mrs Stephens.

"Many people come here because they suffer from illnesses which affect their joints, or their overall mobility. But in addition to that, everyone agrees that it also a fun group.

"We improve people's stamina, their posture and co-ordination, but we are very sociable and can also help to overcome loneliness and isolation all of which goes towards promoting good health and improved quality of life."

Connie Weston, 79, of Chippenham, joined the class soon after the death of her husband four years ago and says it has provided her with so much more than just fitness.

"It has helped me a lot to come and spend time with the other members of the group," she said. "It keeps me supple but has also given me some good friends and many laughs."

Pat Williams, 64, of Chippenham, agreed. "I find the exercises and the social side of the group is a real boost," she said. "I heard about the group one day when I was in the doctors' surgery.

"I have arthritis in my knees and the best thing is that you can do as little or as much as you like. Meryl advises on which exercises are best for us, or one ones we shouldn't attempt."

Mrs Stephens also runs classes in Calne on Tuesday mornings and in Corsham on Thursday afternoons.

"The class is currently only used by ladies but we would be very interested in hearing from men who would like to take part too," she said.

Anyone wishing to take part can either turn up on any Wednesday during term time for a free taster session or ring Mrs Stephens on (01249) 465084 to book a place.
