SHOPPERS in Melksham snapped up some gourmet food at the weekend when a French market came to town.

Twenty stalls set up in the market place between Friday and Sunday selling items such as sausages, bread, garlic and wine, clothes and bags.

The market is run by Marche de France and was organised in conjunction with Melksham Town Council.

Similar events have been taking place across the county in towns such as Trowbridge and Devizes.

Melksham mayor Terri Welch was involved in bringing the market to the town.

She said: "There was wide variety of things for sale and everything was high quality. There was a wonderful stall selling mayonnaise.

"We weren't blessed with the best weather but the market was well received.

"It was absolutely brilliant to see a market in the market place, albeit a French one."
