RESIDENTS in a Bradford on Avon cul-de-sac are celebrating after Wiltshire County Council promised to try and resolve a slippery problem.

A flight of steps in Elms Cross Drive have flooded for several years and residents have to go up and down them avoiding the slime that grows there.

In winter water runs down the steps and freezes, turning the area into an ice rink. One resident said: "The water is a constant hazard. The conditions are very unsafe."

There was confusion over who should end the nuisance, with the county council at first pointing to the garden of a 91-year-old resident as the source of the problem.

There was outrage when the council wrote to the pensioner saying it was her responsibility.

Residents were convinced the water was coming from elsewhere, and the council which has now accepted responsibility.

Last month the Wiltshire Times joined residents in putting pressure on the council to help them put a stop to the nuisance.

Vivienne Kynaston, of Elms Cross Drive, said: "It took a long time to get them to meet us, but when they did they really listened and took notice. We now have to wait and see if draining will be successful."
