DAILY traffic jams in Bradford on Avon show no sign of letting up with hopes for a bypass for the town off the agenda for at least 10 years.
Following a review of route and traffic levels in the town, Wiltshire County Council has decided not to include the possibility for a relief road in the next Structure Plan for Wiltshire.
Bradford county councillor Malcolm Hewson is outraged. He said: "People in Bradford will now see this consultation as a sham with the result a foregone conclusion and no relief in sight for the town."
The council wrote to Bradford Town Council in April warning it Bradford did not fit many of the criteria needed to earn a bypass.
Director of environmental services George Batten said: "I understand that many people in Bradford on Avon will be disappointed by this outcome.
"However, even if a scheme was adopted, it could take up to 10 years to secure the necessary approvals and there would still be uncertainty as to whether funding would be made available from the government.
"I believe that action is required in the short term, and we are developing a series of traffic
management options to deliver immediate benefits for residents and visitors."
