The restoration of an historic building in Trowbridge has won businessman John Giles the town's enhancement award.

The Woolpack in Market Street was built as Court Hall in 1845 for holding county courts and was later used as a cloth merchant warehouse.

After the Second World War it became a restaurant called The Castle, with the first floor used for wedding receptions and local gatherings.

In the 1960s the building was taken over by Berni Inns, who named it The Woolpack because of its connection with the wool trade. In recent years the building has been empty.

Now, thanks to restoration by the business Brothers Giles, it is being used for the family business Mastershoe.

John Giles, who oversaw the building project, was presented with the award at Trowbridge Town Council's town gathering.

He said: "When we took over the building it was in quite a sorry state and it was a lot of work to restore it. We were pleased with the final result."
