In an unsettled week bringing heavy showers and bright and breezy spells, catches were still very good on the Bristol Water trout fisheries.
At Chew, fish remain close to the shore in most areas of the Lake and bank anglers have been taking full advantage of this with good bags from North Shore, Walley, Woodford, Nunnery and Herons Green. Buzzers and Diawl Bachs fished slowly on floating lines have taken fish.
Boat fishermen have had to fish close to the shore to get best catches but there are now fish showing on the surface and the Roman Shallows and False Island are beginning to produce on dries and emergers.
Tony George took a fine catch of five rainbows in a short spell for a weight of 16lb 9oz.
Chew produced a total catch last week of 627 fish averaging 2lb 7oz topped by a brown of 4lb 13oz and rainbow 4lb 4oz with 21 limit bags.
Despite more unsettled weather catches are holding up well on the Wessex Water trout fisheries.
At Hawkridge 164 fish were recorded. Jim Clark took a five fish bag for 12lb 0 oz. James Whamond took a 4lb 0oz rainbow and Clive Allen a five fish catch of 11lb 10oz.
Bathampton members are still enjoying excellent sport at the Hunstrete Lake complex. John Harris took a fine net of bream to 3 lb, tench to 3 lb 8 oz and carp to 9 lb for a weight of 75 lb 0 oz at Withy Pool. John took fish on pole and waggler fished sweetcorn and casters.
At Hunstrete Lake plenty of mirrors and common carp between 15 lb and 22 lb have been taken. Steve Yeomans of Monkton Combe took an excellent catch of tench with five fish weighing over 6 lb 14 oz. His fish all fell to float fished sweetcorn.
The Carps AC match fished at The Sedges on Tuesday produced some reasonable sport. Once again in form Tony Rixon from Avon Angling had a field day with an all carp catch weighing 123lb 12 oz taken on pole fished sweetcorn on a 14 hook to almost double the weight of his nearest rival.
Runner-up was Team Sillybait's Dave Britten with another carp catch weighing 67lb 12oz. He was followed by Bathampton's Kevin Dicks with a carp catch weighing 61lb 15oz and Mark McMahon with a carp catch of 61lb 8oz.
The Wilts Angling Open match fished at Rood Ashton provided good sport with carp. Trowbridge's Mick Gunning carried off top prize with an all carp catch weighing 40lb 4oz taken on pole fished pellets on a 14 hook Dave Bancroft also from Trowbridge took second prize with another carp catch weighing 33lb 10 oz. He was followed by Kevin Grant of Trowbridge with yet another carp catch weighing 32lb 14oz. Other placings: 4 Gerry Lugg, Beckington, 31lb 10oz; 5 Andy Pritchard, Westbury 29lb 0oz; 6 Tony Mumford, Trowbridge 28lb 4oz.
Fish were hard to tempt in the Wilts Angling Open match at Ivy House on Sunday where weights fell well below their best. Fred Eagles from Trowbridge took top spot with an all carp catch weighing 28lb 2oz. Holt's Pete Neate was second with a mixed catch of carp and skimmers weighing 23lb 11oz. He was followed by Bradford's Ian Willetts with an all carp catch weighing 13lb. Other placings: 4 Howard Carpenter, Trowbridge 8lb 15oz; 5 John Sudbury, Melksham and Graham Potter, Trowbridge 7lb 12oz.
