SOUTH Swindon MP, Julia Drown has highlighted the issue of mass killings of civilians in the Democratic Republic of Congo during Prime Minister's Questions.
Ms Drown explained: "The situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo is horrific. The killings include parents witnessing their children being cut up by machetes in front of them."
"The experience has ominous parallels to Rwanda before the genocide of 1994 and the situation is out of control. The UN needs a significant force in the region now to stop further massacres."
The Prime Minister said that he had spoken to Kofi Annan and a UN force was being put together to go into Congo.
He also assured the House the government is doing everything it can to avoid the terrors experienced in the region a decade ago.
Ms Drown added: "I was assured by the Prime Minister he is taking action to tackle this crisis. The government has a good record of involvement in the region and the situation needs the world's attention now if we are to avoid more mass senseless killings."
