A cave such as the one situated near the Town Gardens is an ideal place for rough sleepers who are addicted to drugs to gather.

It is well away from prying eyes, so there is no need to worry about being disturbed.

The problem, of course, lies in the fact that the place is a danger. And nearby residents are bound to be concerned, not only about the drug abuse, but also because discarded needles are potentially hazardous to anyone who goes near.

This newspaper is well aware, of course, that publicising the problem will not solve it. Addicts will always find somewhere to get their fix.

But, by highlighting the issue, we are illustrating the difficulties faced by police and community workers in keeping on top of the problem, as well as trying to find the balance between upholding the law and ensuring the problem is not simply brushed under the carpet.
