ANDY King may have to find a new striking target, with Junior Agogo poised to join Peterborough United.
Agogo's impressive displays for Barnet in the Conference prompted the Town chief to single out the forward as a potential strike partner for Sam Parkin.
But King was unable to match Barnet's £40,000 valuation of the 23-year-old, prompting Posh boss Barry Fry to wade in with an offer worth up to £100,000 based on appearances.
Agogo is expected to agree terms within 48 hours, although Queens Park Rangers may attempt to soften the blow of missing out in the play-off final yesterday with a late bid.
Some reports had suggested that Town were ready to meet the Conference club's demands last week, and a deal to take him to the County Ground would be revived.
But King, who has just returned from his end-of-season holiday, poured cold water on those rumours, insisting that the transfer was always a dead duck.
"It's not true that we agreed a deal someone must have made that up," he said.
"I've been on holiday so nothing has happened."
"We couldn't pay Barnet what they wanted so if the lad's joining Peterborough good luck to him."
King now needs to hunt down at least two frontmen as replacements for the departing Eric Sabin and Danny Invincible, but he has yet to draw up a shortlist of potential targets.
"I haven't got anyone in mind," he insisted.
"I haven't got money to spend, so it's going to be difficult.
" I will just have to wait and see what becomes available."
