SINGER and former Generation Game co-presenter Isla St Clair came to Swindon to raise money for the armed forces and The Children's Society.

The celebrity, best known for her Generation Game stint with the late Larry Grayson, sang at the Swindon Marriott last night.

She said: "I performed a selection of traditional Scottish folk songs, along with modern classics like Sting's Fields Of Gold, for the people of Swindon."

The charity evening was organised by Richard Hilling in memory of his father, Bob, who served in the Rifle Brigade during World War Two.

Mr Hilling, 53, from West Swindon, said: "Bob was an amazing soldier and bandsman who always managed to land on his feet. I wanted to raise money for charities that would have been close to his heart and this venue sounded just perfect."

His father, who died two years ago, was taken prisoner in Calais in 1940. But five years later he was released and travelled back to Liverpool.

"He arrived with nothing more than a suit to his name. Within days he had a £1,000 in his pocket, thanks to his card playing skills," Mr Hilling added.

It was hoped that the evening would raise around £500.

to be split between The Princess Mary's Royal Air Force Nursing Service Trust, The Royal Army Medical Core Charitable Fund and The Fusilier Aid Society.

He chose Isla St Clair to host the event because her music is among the Hilling family's favourites.

Mr Hilling said: "She is fantastic and we love to play her music, especially at Christmas when we all meet up. Sadly my father died two years ago, but we are sure he would have approved of this gathering."

Besides live music, the evening included a buffet and raffle, the proceeds of which will be donated to The Children's Society.
