Some members of parliament say they get more letters about fireworks than they did about the Iraq war.
Low noise fireworks are now said to be available. New laws are on the way.
This should free humans and animals from the distress they have endured for many years due to increasingly loud bangers, air bombs, etc.
The acceptable face of fireworks is the colourful display in the sky. Such displays get a round of applause. Who claps a great big bang?
The big banger has always been anti-social, a blot on the landscape. There is no need for one person's enjoyment to be another's punishment.
We don't expect young males to think such things though. They are on a learning curve, testing the boundaries of behaviour.
But parents and guardians should be able to set an acceptable example. If they don't we could end up living our lives as portrayed in the film Lord of the Flies. Not much fun, was it?
