ANDY KING insists he has not spoken to Peter Reid about a coaching post at Leeds United and will sign a new Swindon Town contract when it is placed in front of him.

The new Elland Road boss has yet to put in place a new backroom team at Leeds, following the respective departures of Eddie Gray and Brian Kidd.

King was Reid's chief scout during their days together at Sunderland but a northern reunion looks extremely unlikely.

He said: "Nothing amazes me anymore in football but I have not spoken to Peter about the Leeds situation.

"He is taking his time before deciding who to bring in to assist him. I have my own thoughts on who he will ask but Peter will go public when he feels the time is right."

King admits he would love a crack at the Premiership one day, but swapping the managerial hot-seat for a top flight back-seat does not appeal.

He said: "There is pressure as a manager and the buck stops with you.

"Once you have been in a position where you are responsible for making all the decisions on the playing side, it is very hard to give that up."

And although King admits he would find any approach from Reid extremely flattering the odds are heavily in favour of him remaining at the County Ground.

He said: "I have spoken to the powers that be at the club about a contract and I have given my word.

"The board have shown loyalty to me and I want to be part of this club as it starts to make progress.

"All I have had each year since I have been in charge is a fight on my hands.

"There has been success of sorts but I feel, talking to people like Sir Seton Wills and the directors, that the problems we have had are starting to be ironed out.

"This is a good football club and I want to help it achieve something.

"Seeing Andy King remain as manager will please some and not others, but that's nothing new.

"I just have to get on and try and assemble a squad which is capable of challenging next season."

King is expected to pen a deal which will extend his stay in Wiltshire by at least two years, although clauses will be inserted to make any future parting of the ways financially amicable for both club and manager.

His current deal, signed on his return to the club in December 2001, expires midway through next season.

Town's reserves are due to face Gravesend and Northfleet at home on July 12 before travelling to Witney United on July 17 for pre-season clashes.

Both matches for Malcolm Crosby's men have yet to be confirmed.
