A GROUP of residents from Haydon Wick are to oppose plans to build Swindon's first skateboard park on land near their homes.

The scheme would transform land near Haydonleigh School Primary School into a skateboard park and a five-a-side football pitch for use by the school for PE activities and by the community.

But residents have reacted to the joint project between Haydon Wick Parish Council and the school, saying it might attract vandals near their homes. They are planning to start a petition.

Bernie Cooney, 39, a former Thamesdown boxer and now an engineer for BMW, said there were a large number of residents near the site who had concerns.

He said: "We aren't a group of fuddy-duddies. We just feel this plan will attract and become a target for vandals. Haydon Wick already has problems with vandalism, as have a number of residents around here.

"We recognise kids need somewhere to go, but this park is going to be left open all night so it's bound to attract attention from vandals and the police cannot always help."

Richard Hailstone, chairman of Haydon Wick Parish Council said: "Unfortunately, vandalism is a symptom of modern life. We are happy to hear any concerns from people living near the site."

Councillor Brenda Craven (Con Haydon Wick) said: "I think young people need a place like a skateboard park. Obviously these people have a valid point and if the park is not sited well enough we need to meet and discuss these problems."

A plan for a skate park off Green-bridge Road was backed by Stratton St Margaret Parish Council, which set aside £40,000.

But Swindon Council rejected the plan because of residents' objections.
