Kevin Spurgeon simply can't stop winning. His latest success was in the Burford Foursomes Pro-Am in Oxfordshire.

The Dudsbury club professional finished in a tie for first place with Derek Craik jnr from Frilford Heath in the 36-hole event.

He was partnered again by Mark Churchill, a five-handicapper at Isle of Purbeck. They returned 67.7 in the morning and 70.5 in the afternoon.

Craik and his partner also scored 138 net the lowest score ever recorded in the event with rounds of 72.5 and 65.5. They took first place because of a better second round. Craik won £1,000 and Spurgeon £800.

"I've been playing at Burford for about 15 years but this is the best finish I've had," said Spurgeon who is now at the top of his form.

Ian Bolt, the teaching pro at the Cricklade Golf and Country Club, was third, playing with five-handicapper Alan Davis, a former captain at The Wiltshire.

Spurgeon featured strongly in the first of a series of Over 40's tournaments in Lancashire.

He shared fourth place at Hillside with rounds of 70 and 74 to win £1,200. He was partnered in the second round by Gordon Brand jnr, the former Ryder Cup player attached to The Players' Club in Bristol.

"He was great company and very supportive," said Spurgeon.

He was 15th in the second tournament at Royal Birkdale, carding two 74s in difficult conditions. That was worth another £300 so he enjoyed a profitable week.

A dozen European Tour players took advantage of the events to get in some valuable competitive practice. Welshman Mark Mouland won them both.
