Sarah Jarrett, from Tickenham, near Bristol, has won the highest possible award for a new golf professional.

She has become the Professional Golfer's Association Titleist Trainee of the Year after three years of hard work.

She receives her certificate, the coveted Whitcombe Cox trophy and £3,500 cheque at a special graduation ceremony at the PGA's headquarters at The Belfry in Warwickshire on Thursday.

Ken Schofield, the executive director of the European Tour, is making the presentation.

Her success was probably not unexpected for she is a model student. She won £1,000 a year ago after coming top of the second-year trainees rankings last year.

Sarah, aged 37, comes from Warwickshire and was a late entrant into professional golf. She has been working at Tickenham with owner-pro Andrew Sutcliffe for two years.

The West has now won the award two years in succession. Michael Stuckey, who qualified with Mark Crowther-Smith at Burnham and Berrow, became the first Somerset winner last year with record marks.

Katie Huffam, another woman professional from the West, is based at Hamptworth on the fringe of the New Forest near Salisbury. She took fifth place this year and wins £900 of the £14,000 Titleist scholarship.
