Leading Dorset amateur David Norton has turned his back on the amateur game in favour of the Europro Tour.
Although he has never won any major events, the county regular who has played at all levels for Dorset since 1996 is determined to prove himself as a professional.
Parkstone member Norton, who played off scratch, turns 24 in July. He said: "I was one of the oldest players in the county team and had a run at the big events like the English Amateur and Brabazon last year.
"But I felt I needed to turn pro if I was going to make an impact in golf. I gained a degree in marketing at Stirling University so have something to fall back on."
His father Pete was formerly right-back with Crewe and the Cherries so understands the feelings of professional sportsmen. He is fully behind his son's ambition and is picking up most of the bills.
"I intend to devote all my energy to concentrate on golf," said David, who lives in Poole. "Anything will be an achievement in my first year as a pro.
"I'll be entering for the European Tour School at the end of the year whatever happens. Then, if I am successful, I can see about getting sponsorship."
He is receiving plenty of advice from his pal Shaun Webster who regained his European Tour card at the qualifying school in December.
He receives tuition from Shaun's father Paul at The Dorset.
He does not view his move as a gamble. "I believe in myself I know what ability I have. Rather than practice once a week and play just once a week I am treating this as a job.
"I always thought that if I dedicated myself I could do well. There is only one way to find out, but I shall be giving it 100 per cent."
He goes with the blessing of county captain John Smith who has employed him as a part-time barman at his Salterns Hotel.
"Everyone in the county wishes him well," he said.
