THOUSANDS of tractors will descend on Hullavington in August for a world record attempt.

In move that is bound to cause frustration to at least an equal number of motorists, The Great British Challenge hopes to attract 2,003 tractors to the same place at the same time, beating the current record of 1,832 working tractors set in Ireland last year.

Organisers John and Lynda Collingborn are based in Newport, Wales, but will be using their brother John Eaves' land by the Hullavington Aerodrome to get into the record books.

Mrs Collingborn said: "We have never done anything like this before but it has really taken off and my front room has turned into an office."

It is the latest attempt in a worldwide competition to get into the record books.

The first record was set in South Africa in 1999 when 109 tractors were assembled in South Africa.

Australia beat that record two years later, only for the accolade to be taken back by the South Africans.

But it was the Irish who set the current total of just under two thousand after they had aimed for just 800.

Mrs Collingborn said it was all friendly competition. She said: "There will be representatives from all the countries at the rally."

All profits raised will be split between Wiltshire Ambulance and Progress For Prostate Cancer.
