THE last wish of Crudwell mother-of-two Rebecca Thomson, for a sports complex to be built in the village, has been realised.

Work on the grounds over the last three months is almost finished and a grand opening ceremony has been set for June 7.

It is the end of a year-long campaign by Mrs Thomson's widower Simon and the Crudwell Recreation Action Group to fulfil his wife's dying wish.

Mrs Thomson died in March last year of brain cancer, aged 39.

The group raised £45,000 in just nine months to build tennis, basketball and netball courts as well as a five-a-side pitch on grounds beside the village hall.

Group member Alan Smith said the village was looking forward to using the new courts.

He said: "The whole community feels very good that there are these fantastic facilities that we are going to use together. I know there are a few dads looking forward to breaking some legs at five-a-side."

The money has been raised from community events such as a fun run held last September and £20,000 from North Wiltshire District Council.

Tennis, football and netball teams have already been formed.
