ELLINGHAM suffered a seven wicket defeat in their rain affected match at Amport.

Three of Ellingham's first five batsmen departed without scoring and it was left to Aaron Barker, 31, Mark Burrett, 33, and Jim Edwards, 21, to score most of their early runs as wickets fell at regular intervals.

It was only a ninth wicket stand between Pat Wickson, 30, and Henry Shutler, 18 not out, which lifted them to a reasonable 157 before they were all out off 42 overs.

The scoring rate of 3.49 an over, looked as though it might test the Amport batsmen who made a slow start reaching only 20-2 form the first ten overs.

They accelerated to 48 off 17 overs and when the game was stopped because of rain, they had reached a more respectable 61-3 from 18 overs.

The rain played into the home side's hands with the target reduced to just 87 from 25 overs.

Nigel Bone hit an un-beaten 33 as Amport cruised to an easy victory.
