YOUTH FOOTBALL: NEARLY 1,400 youngsters took to the field for the Trowbridge Town Youth six-a-side tournament last weekend.

Months of organisation came to fruition on Friday evening with Trowbridge's various youth teams taking part in an inter-club competition to open proceedings.

Each of the 50 plus Trowbridge players to participate received a medal for their role in the curtain-raiser to the main event.

Trowbridge Town Under 12 girls also took part in an exhibition event, taking the honours ahead of local rivals Kingsdown and Bradford on Avon.

Saturday kicked-off with the Under 7 competition, played over five groups.

After some enthralling matches, hosts Trowbridge Town Youth finished as the highest achievers in two of those groups, with Chippenham Town Youth securing the honours in the remaining three sections.

In a very close Under 9 final, Warminster Highbury scored the only goal of the game against Larkhall Athletic.

Meanwhile, Trowbridge Town emerged victorious in a thrilling Under 11 final, edging out neighbours Trowbridge Wanderers 2-0.

In the final event of the day, Trowbridge Town made it a home double with a narrow 1-0 victory over Shaw and Whitley Blue.

The Under 8s were up bright and early on Sunday morning, with Trowbridge Town again emerging as highest achievers in two of the round-robin groups.

Warminster Highbury and Pewsey Vale took the top spots in the remaining sections.

Amesbury Juniors and Trowbridge Wanderers made the final of the Under 10 competition, with the former claiming the trophy by virtue of a 1-0 success in the showpiece.

Trowbridge Wanderers kept the high standard of football going as they battled through to the Under 12s final, beating Melksham Park 1-0 in the main event.

The Under 14s rounded the competition off in great style, with the final proving to be the best match of the whole tournament.

Home side Trowbridge Town were again involved, with Brunel Boys providing tough opposition.

The two sides could not be separated during normal time, but it was Trowbridge who aptly claimed the last piece of silverware of the weekend with a golden goal in extra time.

Organisers of the event were delighted with the turn out and the standard of football on show over the course of the three days.

"It was a great tournament," said club chairman Andy Mackinder.

"We are extremely grateful to those who helped us make this event a success. In particular our referees and those small few who always work so hard to make it all possible. They were certainly rewarded with some outstanding football."
