Sam ParkinMICHAEL REDDY will not be recruited to partner Sam Parkin in Town's attack as Andy King wearily dismissed yet more 'target' speculation.
The 23-year-old Sunderland striker spent the latter part of the 2000/01 campaign at the County Ground and his goals ultimately helped Town narrowly escape the drop that year.
Although King is a great admirer of the young Irish forward, he has dismissed rumours that the former Kilkenny front man will be heading back to Wiltshire this summer.
He said: "I have not spoken to Michael Reddy and budgets dictate that I cannot afford him.
"Whatever his contract is at Sunderland, it's far more than I am able to offer.
"He did a good job for this football club at a time when we needed goals but Sheffield Wednesday look favourites to take the boy."
Reddy, who netted four goals during 18 games for Town, spent the second half of last season on loan at Wednesday, scoring three goals in 13 starts as Chris Turner's men battled unsuccessfully against the drop.
King said the Hillsborough club was a big name in Division Two and despite well-publicised problems, remained an attractive destination for players.
He said: "It looks like I might lose out to them over another player on my wish-list but I'm not prepared to say who it is."
King has already missed out on Junior Agogo, Lee Roche and Kirk Hilton but is hoping the PFA list of released players will bear some fruit next week.
King's lack of transfer funds is hardly a secret but the Town boss has gained something of a reputation as being able to spot talent without breaking the bank.
He admits it is very pleasing when such choices pay off such as Matty Heywood but it is not a situation he is 'happy' to be in.
He said: "I accept the fact that this football club cannot spend what it doesn't have but as a manager it would be wonderful one day to be in a position to spend money.
"Given the choice, no manager is going to say they don't want money to spend.
"All through my managerial career, both at Swindon and at Mansfield, I have had to work on the basis that funds aren't available. It's no good moaning about it, you just have to get on with it.
"I just think it's important for people to realise the situation when they ask about why doesn't Andy King sign this player or that player?"
The annual Swindon Town golf day takes place at Wrag Barn Golf Club on Monday July 14.
