SWINDON CANCER APPEAL:Dave Trollope and Colin Price are thanking their lucky stars their bicycles are fitted with gel seats.

That is because the two men are preparing to take part in a 25-mile bike ride for our Swindon Cancer Appeal.

Dave, a sales and marketing manager at the Milton Club, in Swindon, said the last month of training for the Castles Mountain Bike Ride had gone well.

The 35-year-old from Pembroke Street, in Old Town, said: "It's nearly 10 years since I got on a bike so the 25 miles will be a real challenge and a half.

"But actually I was quite surprised at my fitness when I went on my first training session.

"We are now out on our bikes at every opportunity ready for the event, and have completed a few 10-mile practice runs.

"The Evening Advertiser appeal is great for the people of Swindon, as it brings everyone together."

Colin, a 38-year-old contract cleaner at Honda and member of the Milton Club, said he wanted to help the appeal because he had seen close relatives die from the disease.

He said: "Cancer is a terrible disease. Macmillan nurses are often vital for families, which is why I am supporting this local charity."

The men have already amassed a few hundred pounds in sponsorship between them. They are hoping more will come in over the next few days.

The Milton Club, is the oldest private members club in Swindon and was founded in 1923. It has a membership of 250.

All members have generously given their support to the cyclists as they prepare for their journey on Sunday, June 8.

Jill Greenaway, vice-chairwoman for the Swindon Macmillan committee and bike ride organiser, said: "We have more than 50 bike riders now and hopefully a few more will decide to take up the challenge before the event."

Appeal manager, Graziella Campisano, said: "Dave and Colin should be proud of their efforts for our appeal.

"It just goes to show that even if you're not a regular cyclist you can still take part in our events.

"So many people are getting fit while raising money for the charity, so everyone is a winner."

The Swindon Cancer Appeal total currently stands at £102,148.44.

The aim of the appeal is to raise £600,000 over three years to pay for two Macmillan nurses who will care for Swindon cancer patients at Great Western Hospital.

Cash will also pay for a specialist consultant in cancer care at GWH and Prospect Hospice, plus a part-time anaesthetist who is a specialist in pain control.
