I WILL be surprised (but extremely delighted) if a viable use is found for the Mechanics' at its present location that will satisfy the owner, the conservationists, the residents living locally and be accepted by a majority of the rest of society.
I would suggest dismantling the building brick by brick and rebuilding it in a prominent position on the new university campus at Coate where it can be used as a library and debating chamber.
It will be at home next to the Great Western Hospital and in the great company of the Richard Jefferies museum and Coate Water with its history associated with the Wilts & Berks canal.
If I remember correctly there is a proposal to relocate the canal somewhere in this area as well.
I would also propose renaming the Common Head roundabout when the flyover is eventually opened as Swindon Junction.
