TIE-BREAK therapy and recovery positions will have been in greatest demand after the highs and lows of the weekend Hants and IOW League action in the hottest conditions of the year so far.
First in the queue for a winning tie-break secret will be Riverside's A team men and Victoria Park ladies.
Riverside's loss of five out of five at Bishopstoke cost them the match 5-4, despite winning 11 sets to their opponents' seven.
Victoria Park's ladies, making their Hampshire League debut at Warsash, reached one-set all in five of the rubbers, but won only one of the deciders and suffered an underserved 8-1 beating.
Park's men were spared the extreme heat by playing indoors at the splendid Aldershot tennis centre, but like the three other men's teams in action, also lost 5-4.
Laurent Watremetz and Stuart Martin, by winning their three matches boosted Wellow A to their win at Riverside B. Tim Gadenne and Roger Witt excelled for Salisbury B who are pipped at Buckland.
The weekend's notable winners were the ladies of Salisbury and Riverside. Karina Weedon with Janie Melhuish, and Kath More with June Keen were both undefeated as Salisbury made it two wins out of three in Division One.
Linda Machin with Carol Rogers, and Kay Cropp with Liezl Cuff were the impressive partnerships as Riverside made it two wins from two in Division Two. Downton ladies battled hard before losing 6-3 at the Hampshire Club.
Salisbury's Nigel Watts in the 40 singles, Paul Zielen-iewski in the 45 singles, and Bill Herlihy in the 45 doubles, each won their opening matches before going out of the British Open Veterans Clay Court championships at the West Hants club in Bourne-mouth.
Watts beat Chester opponent Mark Reading 6-3, 6-4 before losing to third seed Rob Booth of West Hants, Zieleniewski beat London-er Eli Harari 7-5, 6-2, then lost to fourth seed John Walsh while Herlihy and his partner fell to second seeds Steve Garman and Richard Leslie after beating West Hants duo Boyd Brackstone and Mike Mitchell 6-3, 5-7, 6-2.
Peter Thompson bowed out 6-0, 7-6 in the 45 singles, then partnered Ziel-eniewski in a heavy defeat by an Oxfordshire pair in the doubles. Alastair Allen against top seeded Dutch-man Henk Nijboer and John Barrett against past champion Derek Howorth, could not bridge the class gap in their opening matches in the 60 singles.
In the doubles, Allen and Barrett, together did better, although beaten 6-2, 6-4 by a combination from Norfolk and Spain.
