WILTSHIRE County Council is looking for people to volunteer to become school governors.
It is looking for about 190 people to give up some of their spare time to help run the county's schools.
School governors have a wide range of responsibilities, including finance, personnel, the curriculum and health and safety.
There are 3,700 governors in Wiltshire and about 300 posts remain unfilled at any one time. Some of these have to be filled by school and church representatives but about 190 need to be filled by lay people.
There will be a programme of seminars held across the county over the next ten months where prospective governors can find out more.
The county council cabinet member for education, Jane Scott, said the work of governors is vital.
"There can be few more rewarding roles than making sure young people get a good education and the best possible start in life," she said.
The seminars are being held on the following dates: June 10 at County Hall, Trowbridge; September 16 at St John's School and Community College, Marlborough; November 26 at Kington Manor, Chippenham; and January 29 2004 at Southbroom Junior School, Devizes. Sessions run from 6.30pm to 8.30pm.
Anybody interested in becoming a governor should call the council on (01225) 713774 or e-mail sandramounty@wiltshire.gov.uk
