DEVIZES Samba Band have plenty to bang the drum about this week after it learned it has been awarded £4,795 in the latest round of the National Lottery's Awards for All scheme.
The group, who call themselves Oi Sambistas! (Oh, samba makers) was set up in September 2002 and now boasts upwards of 30 members in Devizes and the surrounding area. None of the members had any previous experience of either dancing or drumming.
They admit they are still learning, but audiences who have seen them at Devizes Carnival and other venues have been absolutely knocked out by their rhythms and colour.
Dance leader Sue Bishop said: "We are so excited and pleased about the grant. It gives us a chance to improve our performance skills and get some really exciting costumes."
Oi Sambistas! can be seen at Devizes Hospital League of Friends' summer fete on Saturday, at Marlborough Jazz Festival, at Rowdeford School's fete and fire walk on June 14, and, of course, at this year's Devizes Festival procession.
The band welcomes prospective drummers or dancers. If you are interested, ring drum leader Paddy on (01380) 729393 or Sue Bishop on (01380) 721765. Beginner sessions are held regularly.
