A DRUNKEN woman who had to be carried from a Chippenham pub to a waiting police car was given a 12-month conditional discharge by magistrates.

Hazel Rose, 52, lapsed in and out of consciousness as she sat outside the Four Seasons pub.

Police officers were called to the pub at about 11.30pm on May 23 and tried to wake her but she lashed out at officers and had to be carried to a squad car.

Prosecutor Becky Abbott said when Rose was conscious she hurled verbal abuse at officers.

While in the van Rose kicked out at the roof and glass windows before officers used leg restraints.

Miss Abbott said: "The defendant was very drunk and incapable of looking after herself."

Taken back to Melksham custody unit and placed in a cell, Rose ripped open a mattress and climbed inside claiming she was "frozen stiff".

Defence solicitor Tim Hammick said agoraphobic Rose had experienced a "difficult and uncertain life".

He said Rose split open the mattress and climbed in because officers never fetched her a blanket.

Rose, of Broomfield, admitted being drunk in a public place and criminal damage when she appeared before Chippenham magistrates on Monday.

Magistrates ordered her to pay £56.13 compensation for the mattress and costs of £55.
