THE second Trowbridge Kwik Cricket Tournament for primary schools saw last year's winners, Walwayne Court, repeat the feat and carry off the trophy, much to the delight of their supporters.
The competition, sponsored by Trowbridge Windows and Conservatories, provided a good run out for those schools who are entering the National Knockout competition, to be played at Trowbridge and Westbury on June 13.
The Walwayne Court team, led by captain Lucas Mardling, were convincing winners in all their matches throughout the day at Trowbridge Cricket Club. They were deserved winners of the title, which was contested by six teams of eight players.
The event is the focal point of the club's season, as it seeks to publicise the club to potential members and spectators.
Many of the players involved in the tournament either played in last season's competition, or are already members of Trowbridge Cricket Youth.
In the final, Walwayne Court met the Trowbridge Cricket Youth Select team. In comparison, their achievement must rank greater than that of Walwayne Court.
The Select team was made up of mainly girls who were friends of Trowbridge Cricket Club members or members of the Girls division of the youth section. The team had never played together before, but managed to gel together well under manager Lauren Hickerton.
In the final Walwayne Court won the toss and decided to field. The plan worked well, as the Select team's score remained low until the last pair came to the wicket.
The bowling of Michael Reynolds had been accurate and effective throughout the tournament, and in his final over he kept the score down to 203 off the eight overs.
Walwayne Court found no problem in scoring runs as they punished the Select side's less controlled bowling.
Michael Reynolds and Lucas Mardling scored efficiently, keeping the holders always ahead of the required rate.
The final score of 260 showed their dominance over the rest of the competitors.
In the third/fourth place play-off Parochial saw off Keevil by 261 runs to 239.
The fifth/sixth place match remained tight until the last overs before Staverton finally got the better of Newtown.
The Player of the Tournament trophy went to Michael Reynolds of Walwayne Court, who managed to take a hat-trick in their final group match.
The tournament will return next season, and the club will ask for feedback from the schools about how the event can be improved in the coming years.
