A LORRY driver from Swindon has been released on bail following his arrest on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after a family was killed on the M1 in Bedfordshire.
The family of four from Northampton, including two children aged under 10, were killed on the northbound carriageway between junction 13 at Ridgmont and junction 14 at Milton Keynes.
Their bodies have not yet been identified and police are still trying to trace the next of kin.
The 46-year-old man was questioned at Dunstable Police Station and is due to report back to Bedfordshire Police on August 7.
The collision happened at 12.20am yesterday as the family's saloon car travelled north behind two articulated lorries.
Police believe the three vehicles moved to the slow lane and began to reduce their speed as the middle and fast lanes were closed due to road works. It is thought a third articulated lorry also moved across it is believed it was then in collision with the family's car.
The road was closed for five hours and diversions put in place.
Bedfordshire Police are appealing for witnesses, particularly from motorists who were travelling in the opposite direction and may have seen what happened.
