UNTIL JUNE 7, BATH: The Cherry Orchard, Theatre Royal Bath: SOMETIMES it seems as though a part was written for a certain actor or actress even when it wasn't Lyubov Ranevskaya could have been written for Geraldine James.

Of course this isn't the case as Anton Chekhov wrote The Cherry Orchard back in 1904.

This new translation by Samuel Adamson definitely brings humour to the forefront of this production by the Oxford Stage Company.

There are some really funny characters including Yepikhodov played by Michael Matus and Yasha played by Francis Lee.

The play centres around Madame Ranyevskya having to sell her idyllic childhood home the cherry orchard.

She is faced with a mound of debts when she returns from Paris after five years of being away and it seems as if this is the only option. But the cherry orchard means everything to her as you can see in the emotional performance put across by Geraldine James.

All the cast members were very strong and one in particular to look out for is Lucy Gaskill who plays Dunyasha.

Most people will recognise her as loud-mouth Ruby, from the TV series Cutting It. It's great to see her in a stage role playing a completely different character. She only graduated from drama school just over a year ago and definitely has a great career ahead of her. Sarah Seamarks
