DRUGS FEATURE: WITHIN a day of its launch, 26 calls have been taken by police operating the Swindon Drugs Hotline.

As soon as yesterday's newspaper hit the streets, the phone was ringing with the first call to the hotline, which has been launched by the Evening Advertiser and the police.

The caller, from West Swindon, rang to tell detectives he believed his neighbour was selling drugs.

Meanwhile, the Evening Advertiser has received backing from across the town for the hotline, which aims to clamp down on dealers who sell £50,000 worth of drugs every day in Swindon.

Mayor Derek Benfield said: "Any initiative which eradicates drug use is to be applauded."

And council leader Mike Bawden (Con, Old Town and Lawns) said: "It is vitally important that all agencies work with the police to ensure the drugs issue is confronted urgently."
