SWINDON CANCER APPEAL: OCCASIONAL downpours did little to dampen the spirits of visitors to Bourton Village Festival, which helped raised more cash for our Swindon Cancer Appeal.

The main routes through the village, known as the hill and the village square, were closed to traffic for the launch of the one-day festival and those wanting to pay a visit were charged a £1 entrance fee.

A wealth of events were staged for the bi-annual show on Sunday, ranging from performances by the Appalachian Clog Dancers, face painting, a range of stalls selling plants, bric-a-brac and a dog race involving local pets.

Chairman of the festival committee, Silverio Ostrowksi explained that the origins of the event were steeped in history.

He said: "Some sort of festival has been held in the village at this time of year for hundreds of years.

"We hold this event every other year and it seems to have been very successful."

He explained that proceeds from the event, expected to top £4,000, would be divided between the Evening Advertiser's Swindon Cancer Appeal, the local branch of boy scouts, the village hall, and the Hope and Homes for Children charity.
