HELP is at hand for companies in south Wiltshire having trouble filling their vacancies and for people with disabilities who want to work.
Hazel Matthews has been appointed by a number of charitable organisations and public bodies in Salisbury as a supported employment development officer.
Her task is to open the door to employment to more disabled people, help employers recruit from this pool of potential employees and retain employees who may become disabled through accident or ill health.
She is currently visiting employers in the area and liaising with organisations such as Business Link, the Chamber of Commerce and the Federation of Small Businesses to broaden awareness of her role and identify the needs of the business sector.
Several businesses in the Salisbury area employ disabled people, such as Woven Electronics in Wilton, which Ms Matthews has visited.
Now she is trying to reach a wider audience in the business community.
"If you are disabled you are five times more likely to be unemployed than an able-bodied person despite the qualifications you have," she said.
"I have heard all manner of stories about the statistics surrounding unemployment but one that sticks in my mind is ten GCSEs plus two A levels plus one degree plus 114 job applications plus 24 interviews equals no job and one disability."
She said companies could become involved in schemes to help disabled people without committing to full-time employment.
Some might have positions requiring only a few hours work each week.
Others could provide mentoring, giving disabled people work experience and build their CVs.
"There are people wanting to work," said Ms Matthews, "And there are employers who need staff.
"Bringing the two together in a way that suits both parties is my aim.
"I can offer a confidential ear to employers if they need help or advice on either retaining employees who have acquired a disability or recruiting disabled people."
Ms Matthews' post is funded by Wiltshire county council, South Wilts Mencap, Alabar Christian Care Centres, Job Centre Plus, Connexions, Salisbury College, South Wiltshire Primary Care Trust and is hosted by Salisbury District Council.
