DADS with the DIY bug save families around £500 a month.

A new survey released in the run up to Father's Day on Sun-day has found that one in six people say dads are crazy about DIY.

The survey, by the Swindon-based Nationwide Building Society, claims that more that a third of fathers spend more than eight hours a week doing household chores.

Nearly 70 per cent do DIY, 60 per cent do gardening and nearly half fix their own cars.

In addition, a third of men do cleaning, 40 per cent do the cooking and nearly 20 per cent look after the children.

In fact, one in five households said that dads do more around the house than mums.

Steve Clode of Nationwide said: "All these odd jobs fathers do around the house really add up."
