ANGRY residents are demanding urgent action to improve safety on Lyneham's roads, following the death of RAF airman Colin Burnett last week.

The 32-year-old father-of-two was killed when his motorbike collided with a Porsche on the B4069 Chippenham Road.

The cause of the accident is not yet known, but residents say that insufficient speed controls are turning their village roads into a death-trap and that unless speed cameras are installed, more people could be killed.

At a meeting of the parish council on Tuesday evening, residents quizzed local councillors and police representatives about what can be done.

Wiltshire Constabulary has already identified the A3102 and B4069, which both run through Lyneham, as priority routes for speed cameras, but action is being delayed until new Government regulations on speed control are published in two months' time.

The residents say that is too long to wait. Andy Humm, who is the web manager of the award-winning website, Lyneham, Wiltshire and Beyond, revealed that a poll on road safety, conducted on the site ten days ago, has already provoked more than 900 messages of concern. "The response has been staggering," he said.

"But the fact is that Lyneham has witnessed several serious accidents in recent years and people are worried that if something isn't done to curb people's speeding soon, more people, maybe even children, could lose their lives."

Father-of-five Mr Humm says messages posted tell of motorcyclists clipped by speeding cars, drivers speaking on mobile phones and skid marks surrounding the mini-roundabout near to the village primary school.

Councillor Toby Sturgis admitted that Lyneham had experienced a significant increase in road traffic in recent years. He said that he would be investigating traffic surveys for the village. But he said: "It would be unwise for the county council to spend money on installing speed measures which could change entirely with the new Government regulations in two months time.
