A NEW call-a-friend campaign has been launched in Calne to combat distraction burglaries committed in the area by bogus callers.
Vulnerable people living in the community will be encouraged to keep a special yellow card with the telephone number of a relative, friend or neighbour, who will come round if a stranger calls, to watch over the visit.
The campaign, which is an initiative of the Calne and District Crime Prevention Panel, will target elderly people living in the community, who are often victims of distraction burglaries.
It aims to reduce both the risk and fear of crime to these groups.
If a friend is not available the card encourages holders to telephone the police. An officer will then attend to verify the caller's credentials.
