SWINDON CANCER APPEAL: Athletes at Trax gym know the meaning of the old saying 'no pain, no gain'.

Around 55 people took part in a gruelling two-week long marathon event, and amassed £3,000 for the Swindon Cancer Appeal.

Participants at the Shepherd Street gym had to complete 26 miles using a combination of rowing, treadmill and cycling machines.

Rob Karn, 25, gym manager, hit upon the madcap idea because he thought the Evening Advertiser's appeal to fund more cancer nurses in Swindon is so worthwhile.

Rob, who lost three grandparents to cancer, completed his 26 miles in the fastest time 1 hour 58 minutes.

The Swindon Harriers runner said: "It was a great way to raise money for the appeal and everyone did really well."

The quickest time for a non-staff member was 2hrs 18minutes by Paul McCombe, who is in his 20s and from Erin Court, in Swindon.

Trax members paid £5 to enter the competition, while non-members paid £10 and enjoyed free use of the gym facilities for the two-week period.

In addition individuals raised money through sponsorship.

Pat O'Driscoll, gym director, 42, took seven hours to complete his marathon, which comprised a mixture of rowing, running and cycling.

He said: "I was determined to take part even though I had a calf injury, which I got after chasing a bag snatcher in Swindon.

"I'm delighted so many people bothered to come along and take part. It shows that everyone values Macmillan. Even those who didn't take part sponsored others."

Appeal manager Graziella Campisano said: "Participants at Trax gym worked so hard to raise this money.

"It's an outstanding effort and the money raised is a huge boost to the appeal.

"I hope everyone who took part took a well deserved rest after their marathons and that their legs are now feeling a little less stiff.

"People are coming up with all sorts of ideas to raise cash.

"I can't wait to hear from more Evening Advertiser readers to see what else they can think of.

"The appeal seems to be bringing everyone in Swindon and Marlborough together."

The appeal total today stands at £113,280.
