REPLYING finally to Mr Eels (Gazette June 5) I have read the White Paper on regional change.
Did he attend the November 23 2002 conference in Bradford-on-Avon? Presided over by the Bishop of Exeter, it made clear that an elected Assembly for the south west would only be the start, if approved. It would compliment county councils and allow power to devolve downwards from Whitehall.
All professional people of goodwill want an improved, more democratic Learning and Skills Council. "Toothlessness" was a jibe word directed at the Welsh Assembly up and running, it is now achieving a lot, led by Rhodri Morgan. We need a radical Rhodri for our own dear West Country.
