THE Advertiser (May 9) highlighted the spate of distraction burglaries.

I'm sure many readers were angry after reading the article. What kind of people are these morons, robbing old age pensioners and targetting sheltered housing?

Old people are on a fixed income and can least afford to be burgled, many cannot even afford insurance. We cannot imagine the trauma they must go through and the state of mind they are left in.

Sadly there is only a 16 per cent detection rate and the difficulties the police encounter with traumatised victims we can well imagine.

Many old people fought and risked their lives fighting for our freedom. The least they deserve is protection in their own homes from these parasites.

In view of the difficulties the police must encounter it is up to the courts to give out appropriate sentences.

Jail sentences should be mandatory in all cases without remission. Full financial reimbursement should be compulsory to every victim . After a lifetime working it's the least our senior citizens deserve .
