JUNIOR AGOGO'S failure to sign for Peterborough United will only re-ignite a possible switch to the County Ground if Barnet accept the club's original bid.
The striker was widely expected to agree a move to London Road after the Conference side accepted a £100,000 offer from Barry Fry but the player failed to agree personal terms.
Town boss Andy King put in a £35,000 bid for the 23-year-old in late April, only for Barnet to subsequently demand £40,000.
As the player's situation became known, the price continued to rise with Peterborough prepared to pay six figures for the former Sheffield Wednesday and Queens Park Rangers man.
However, chief executive Mark Devlin has said Town will only talk to Barnet again if they are willing to accept the £35,000 on the table.
He said: "We had hoped and expected that the initial negotiations with Barnet over Junior Agogo would have remained private.
"They chose to make the situation public, something we would rather have avoided and were not happy with.
"What I want to make very clear is that we will not be drawn into an auction for anyone."
With the Peterborough deal having collapsed Barnet boss Martin Allen expects Agogo to report for pre-season training at Underhill.
He said: "I must make it clear that no other club has made an acceptable offer and therefore he will not be allowed to talk to other clubs unless they do."
As well as Swindon and Peterborough, the player has also been strongly linked with a move to Bristol Rovers with former Town favourite Giuliano Grazioli rumoured to be heading to Barnet as part of any deal.
However, Agogo has told King that a move to Swindon appeals to him as he would relish the chance to partner Sam Parkin.
Although Town have so far failed to tie up any senior fresh faces, Devlin feels the transfer market will start to liven up after June 30.
He said: "I think July 1 will be the key date. Players' contracts expire and pre-season training is just around the corner.
"Those two things can sometimes help focus a player and lead him to start making decisions about his future.
"Hopefully that will apply to the players Andy (King) is keen to bring to the club."
Devlin has also stressed that deals are rarely as straightforward as King ringing up a player and making him an offer.
He said: "That does happen in some cases but in others you can find yourself having to go through three 'representatives' before you get to the player - if you get to him."
King is clear that fresh faces are a 'must' not a luxury. With all the summer departures, his first team squad looks distinctly threadbare.
He said: "If you take away the young lads, I have no more than seven or eight senior players at the moment."
Tickets for Town's home pre-season friendlies against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Portsmouth and Manchester United are on general sale from today.
