In Mrs Wyeth's letter (Wiltshire Times, May 30) she mentions the County Council's scheme for the A36 Codford-Heytesbury Improvement addresses all the accident black spots, as indeed it does, at great cost both to the environment and the public purse.
The scheme was also supported by many local people who were unaware there should have been alternatives to choose from.
CPRE, which does not claim to represent rural England but campaigns vigorously to protect it, supports wholeheartedly the idea that safety measures should be implemented on this road. We wonder why proper online measures were not already in place which could have prevented the many casualties since 1997, instead of the council being encouraged by Government Office for the south west to bid for a scheme for which no government money has yet been forthcoming.
The short time between the Planning Application for this scheme being made public and the deadline for response precluded any time for us to consult local Parish Councils on our alternative. We should be pleased to discuss it with Codford Parish Council, and any others interested.
